DON CARTER MEMORIAL CELEBRATION SET FOR FEB. 4 IN WINTER GARDEN, FLORIDA
A memorial get together to celebrate the life of the late PBA Hall of Famer Don Carter has been scheduled for Saturday, Feb. 4, at 2 p.m. at West Orlando Baptist in Winter Garden, Fla., followed by a gathering for friends and family at Carter Family Bowl, 715 S. Dillard St., Winter Garden.
The Carter family invites all who attend to bring your bowling ball. Food and refreshments will be provided. Speakers will include PBA Hall of Famer Larry Lichstein, Tom Herter, pro shop operator Mike Popp and PBA Tour champion Bob Handley.
In memory of Don Carter, the family has asked that contributions be sent in Don’s name to: Kids Against Hunger, P.O. Box 178, Tavares, FL 32778 (www.kahtavares.org) or St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (www.stjude.org).

O’NEILL TOPS FAGAN TO WIN BRUNSWICK BALLMASTER OPEN IN HELSINKI
Bill O’Neill of Southampton, Pa., defeated Mike Fagan of Dallas, 236-224, to win the 42nd annual Brunswick Ballmaster Open at Tali Bowling Center in Helsinki, Finland, on Sunday, Jan. 15. The Ballmaster Open was the first of 14 qualifying events on the World Tenpin Bowling Association’s 2012 World Bowling Tour.
Fagan, after qualifying third for the stepladder finals, defeated England’s Dom Barrett, 232-214, and defending Ballmaster Open champion Mika Koivuniemi of Hartland, Mich., 251-233, to advance to the title match.
A number of PBA Tour competitors made the trip to Finland for the European Bowling Tour event. Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, finished sixth and Chris Loschetter of Avon, Ohio, rounded out the top 10. Other PBA Tour cashers included Finland’s Osku Palermaa, U.S. players Tommy Jones, Patrick Allen, Ronnie Russell, Dino Castillo, Sean Rash, Tom Hess, Ryan Ciminelli, Parker Bohn III, Sweden’s Martin Larsen, and England’s Stuart Williams.

Rumor has it the fourth annual PBA Chris Paul Celebrity Invitational presented by Sheets Brand, featuring Storm Products’ representatives Jason Belmonte, Pete Weber, Wes Malott and Ryan Shafer bowling with a bevy of celebrity bowlers at Lucky Strike LA Live, was a festival of fun.
The pre-Super Bowl telecast was conducted in Los Angeles for the first time, following Paul’s trade from the New Orleans Hornets to the Los Angeles Clippers. The PBA’s annual celebrity event is a fundraiser for the CP3 Foundation, which funds a variety of charities.

The inaugural Xtra Frame Tour Cheetah Open presented by Ebonite will be webcast live Saturday and Sunday, Jan. 21 and 22, from Fountain Bowl in Fountain Valley, Calif. Saturday’s coverage will include nine-game qualifying squads starting at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Pacific Time (noon and 7 p.m. Eastern). The top 24 players will advance to bowl a six-game round-robin match play round at 9 a.m. Pacific (noon Eastern), and a seven-game round at 1:30 p.m. (4:30 p.m. Eastern). The top four players after 22 games of qualifying and match play will advance to the Cheetah Open stepladder finals at 6 p.m. Pacific (9 p.m. Eastern).
At stake is a $10,000 first prize, a PBA Tour title and an automatic berth in the Round of 36 for the end-of-season PBA Tournament of Champions.
WORLD BOWLING WRITERS HONOR KOIVUNIEMI, PLUHOWSKY, NICHOLSON
Reigning PBA Player of the Year Mika Koivuniemi has been selected as the World Bowling Writers’ 2011 Bowler of the Year after winning the PBA Tournament of Champions and the inaugural WTBA World Bowling Tour men’s championship, finishing second in the U.S. Open and third in the USBC Masters. Koivuniemi also won the prized Brunswick Ballmaster Open title in his native Finland to start the season.
PBA Women’s Series champion Shannon Pluhowsky received double honors as WBW Women Bowler of the Year and election to the WBW Hall of Fame. Pluhowsky won a record four gold and one bronze medal in the 2011 WTBA World Women’s Championships. She also is a two-time QubicaAMF World Cup winner, and won the Team USA and Junior Team USA National Championships three times each.
PBA Hall of Famer Lenny Nicholson has been named recipient of the Gosta Zellen Golden Quill Award for distinguished service to bowling journalism. The long-time PBA lane maintenance supervisor has been a pioneer in online “radio” programming with his weekly Phantom Radio interviews of leading bowling personalities.
MIDWEST, CENTRAL SENIORS TO BOWL IN LYNWOOD, ILLINOIS
PBA Regional activity resumes for Midwest and Central senior players with the Lynwood Bowl Senior Open in Lynwood, Ill., Jan. 20-22, and the Sparetime Lanes Senior Open, Feb. 3-5, in Decatur, Ill. Both events are sponsored by Allstate Insurance.
The PBA Central Region’s Legend Lanes Regular/Senior Doubles Classic is set for Jan. 27-29 in Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
February’s highlight for non-senior players include the new Regional Players Doubles Championship presented by Hammer Feb. 10-12 at The Orleans in Las Vegas.
