After the fall of Saddam Hussein, looters removed priceless items from the National Museum of Antiquities in Baghdad. Among them were 2 Mesopotamian works of art: the Warka Vase (an image of a woman in marble known as the Lady of Warka), and the Bosetki statue (lower torso of a man cast in copper).
Some of the most famous pieces stolen were eventually returned or abandoned because they were impossible to sell. Due to earlier efforts by the Baghdad museum, cataloging and photographing each item made their identification possible.
Unlike the looters of ancient Egypt, the looters of today are armed with assault rifles. With the intervention of American troops, further looting can perhaps be prevented in Iraq.
