Tatted Cuff from the Delineator 1903 pg. 138 fig. 2
This dainty-looking tatted cuff and collar set will be lovely when it is worked up. However, getting to that point is quite a journey. In essence each "flower" is a simple center ring with lots of picots to which chains of varying lengths and decorative picots will join. Each flower is ended with a cloverleaf "bud" on a dead end chain. With study I think we could find a way to tat this without cutting the thread between the flowers.

Note that there are a couple of regular picots, but the others are all long picots marked lp. Sometimes a ring or chain ends with lp, i.e., R 3 - [long picot]) 7x, close ring. Today we would express that direction as R (3 long picot) 7x, 1 close ring. But they deemed it was not necessary to add that last double stitch notation as the making of the last picot includes the final actual double stitch.

Using 2 threads (2 shuttles or one shuttle and the ball thread) with size 70 thread a round center ring is to be surrounded with chains joined to the picots with a shuttle lock join.

R (2 - ) 6x, 2 ds clr (do not rw)
CH (3 - [a long picot] ) 7x, 3 + (join to the first free picot of ring)
CH 3 + (join to preceding chain) 3 + (join again)
CH (3 - [a long picot] ) 7x, 3 + (join to the second free picot of ring)
CH (3 - [a long picot] ) 19x, 3 + (join to the third free picot of ring)

Begin the second long chain.
CH 3 long picot + (join to picot of preceding long chain)
CH 3 + (join again); repeat 5 x for a total of 7 joins,
CH (3 - [long picot]) 16x for a total of 23 picots, 3 ds + (join to the fourth free picot of ring)

Begin the third long chain (called a loop in the original)
CH 3 long picot + (join to long chain ) repeat 7x,
CH (3 long picot) 12 x + (join to the fifth free picot of ring)
CH 3 + (join to picot of third chain)
CH (3 - [long picot]) 8x + (join to the sixth free picot of ring)
CH 3 + (join to preceding chain) 3 + (join again)
CH (3 - [long picot]) 5x + (join to the seventh free picot of ring)
CH (3 - [long picot]) 7x

Begin ring with shuttle thread.
R 8 clr SLJ to fifth picot of first chain.
CH (3 - [long picot])11x

Begin cloverleaf with the shuttle thread.
R (3 - [long picot]) 3x, 3 + (join to the 16th picot of last long chain) close ring.
R 3 + join to last picot of previous ring (3 - [long picot]) 7x, close ring.
R 3 + join to last picot of previous ring (3 - [long picot]) 5x, close ring.
This completes one large flower for the cuff. Repeat as needed for width of wrist.

The small flower(it is called the heading in the original) is made with two threads and begins with shuttle 1 making a ring.
R (2 long picot) 6x close ring.
CH (3 long picot) 7x + (join to first picot of ring)
CH 3 long picot + (join picot of last chain) 3
CH (3 long picot) 7x + (join to first picot of ring)
CH (3 long picot) 7x + (join to second picot of ring) (This makes 10 picots)
CH 3 long picot + (join picot of last chain) 3
CH 3 long picot + (join picot of last chain) 3
CH 3 + 3 + (3 long picot) 5x, 3 + (join to fifth picot of ring)
CH (3 long picot) 7x

R 8 + (join to fourth picot of fifth chain) 8 close ring
CH (3 long picot) 3x, 3

Begin cloverleaf with the shuttle thread.
R (3 - [long picot]) 3x, 3 + (join to the 16th picot of last long chain) close ring.
R 3 + join to last picot of previous ring (3 - [long picot]) 7x, close ring.
