Leonardo da Vinci is best known for his painting, "Mona Lisa." But there is a religious painting "St. Jerome" (1482) that has an unusual twist of fate. The subject of the painting is St. Jerome in the desert. Accompanying him is a lion who has been his constant companion ever since St. Jerome extracted a thorn from the lion's foot. Not only was the painting unfinished when Leonardo left Florence and went to Milan, but it had suffered damage over the years. Many years passed by and part of the panel of "St. Jerome" came up for auction in Rome, but unfortunately without the head of the saint. As fate would have it, the section containing the head was found in the wooden support of a cobbler's bench. Today, the painting is one of the treasure of the Vatican collection in Rome.
