The first signs of fall are the changing colors of the leaves. These beautiful colors call to tatters to use them to recreate the leaves in lines of lace.

One unique leaf is shown on the opening page of a book by Toni Storer.
I have admired this leaf since first I saw it. It is a chain of pearl or Maltese tatting to which a second line of tatting is attached. The second line attaches to the first with a double stitch in which the first half and second half stitch are placed on adjoining loops formed between the original double stitch on the base line.
This elongated effect was also seen on the wonderful 3-dimensional tatted iris by the late Sieglinde Grigat. However, these leaves were tatted in block style tatting.
Long leaves are also possible using the Ruth Scharf style tatting. This is seen in the daffodil leaves by Inger Kirsten.
The original Ruth Scharf leaf creates a dense form.
But leaves come in many forms and you need to look at many designs with fresh eyes. For example, if this holiday tree pattern by Linda Davies is turned 90 degrees... a leaf appears!
