Whistler was born in Lowell, MA where a museum in his name stands today. He would later have a short stay at West Point and flunk out. Whistler then joined the US Navy, learned etching, and became a cartographer. After first visiting Paris, Whistler would later settle in London and begin his career as a serious painter.
