It is remarkable to think that before making Miracle at St Anna, Spike Lee directed the masterpiece When the Levees Broke, screened at Venice in 2006 and then on RAI night-time television. It is remarkable because what doesn’t work in this fictional reconstruction of fighting on the Gothic Line in Tuscany in 1944 is precisely what made the documentary about post-Katrina New Orleans so beautiful and so irresistible: respect for people, events and what actually happened. How is it that the director who conveyed with touching authenticity the intense desperation of people hit by a disastrous weather event seems so phoney and rhetorical when he is describing people struggling with being at war?
