Tat Mats by Karey Solomon

For more than 20 years Karey Solomon has published a petite booklet, Tatting Times, in which many talented tatters, fascinating patterns (using both vintage and modern tatting techniques,) new products and threads and the occasional poem and recipe are featured. With 5-6 new patterns in each issue and book reviews, "Tatting Times" has become an invaluable resource for tatters over the years.

And she continues to publish a series of booklets, 8.5" x 5" with about 25 pages each, sharing many types of patterns and tatting techniques.

This new booklet features original designs which may be used for many purposes. Singly, they could be mats, coasters, rug mugs or adorable motifs for clothing embellishment. Each pattern has a teaching element to it also. The Simple Dahlia is an exercise in the Catherine Wheel join. The Log Cabin square is built using the block tatting technique. Details and notes about tatting a block are included. Diagrams are minimal but some have the double stitch count designated on them. There are also two patterns which use the half-balanced double stitch which is well explained.

Karey also founded and continues to host the Finger Lakes Tatting Guild annual seminar, a large venue located just a few miles from Hector, NY, the wine-producing region of the Finger Lakes area. Held every spring, the event is an international gathering of tatters, instructors, new patterns, vendors, great food - and a whole lot of fun, a sort of family reunion where everyone's invited to be part of the family. For more information about, these books, "Tatting Times" quarterly or the Tatting Seminars in the Finger Lakes, contact Karey at threads@empacc.net.

This booklet is particularly good for the intermediate tatter.

I acquired this new book as a gift from Karey Solomon, a long-time friend. I am happy to add it to my personal tatting reference library. G. Seitz.
