INTERNATIONAL PARTICIPATION HITS RECORD 15 NATIONS FOR PBA WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING

With the entry of six players from Bahrain, the 2011 PBA World Series of Bowling is assured of a record number of at least 15 nations that will be represented in the two-week extravaganza at South Point Casino, Hotel and Bowling Center in Las Vegas.



Among the 41 early entries into the third annual WSOB are players representing Australia, Bahrain, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, England, Finland, Germany, Mexico, New Zealand, Poland, South Korea, Sweden, Venezuela and the United States. Each of the two previous World Series had representation from 14 countries.



Capacity for the 2011 World Series is 240 players. A one-time $800 entry fee for non-exempt players includes the Bayer Viper Open, Chameleon Open, Scorpion Open, GEICO Shark Open and the PBA World Championship. BARNES, LOSCHETTER, HAUGEN CAPTURE REGIONAL TITLES

Chris Barnes of Double Oak, Texas, defeated amateur Robert Klann of San Antonio, Texas, 279-224, to win the 8th annual PBA Southwest Region Young & Pratt Austin Open at Dart Bowl in Austin, Texas, on Sunday, Oct. 9.



Barnes survived his best-of-five-game Round of 16 elimination match against Andy Mortensen, Arlington, Texas, 3-2, when Mortensen opened in the 10th frame of the fifth game and escaped with a 2-1 victory in the best-of-three Round of 8 match when Nathan Bohr of Derby, Kan., failed to double in the 10th frame of that match’s final game. Barnes then eliminated Mark Williams of Beaumont, Texas, 257-210, in their semifinal round match.



It was Barnes’ 22nd career PBA Regional title, his second of the 2011-12 season, and he collected $2,400 for his win.



In the PBA Central Region, Chris Loschetter of Avon, Ohio defeated Brad Angelo of Lockport, N.Y. by 152 pins to win the Boss Plows/Mid State Truck and Stonebrooke Rehabilitation Centre & Suites Open at Rose Bowl in New Castle, Ind., on Sunday, Oct 9.



It was Loschetter’s second Central Region win of the season and the 11th of his career. He finished the 20-game event with a 9-3 match play record and a total of 4,976 pins, including match play bonus pins, to claim the $3,000 top prize.



In the PBA West Region, Michael Haugen Jr. of Cave Creek, Ariz., posted an 8-2 match play record and an 18-game total of 4,216 pins Sunday to win the TKR General Contractor Open at Golden Pin Lanes in Tucson, Ariz. Haugen, who earned $2,000, defeated Kevin Gallagher of Torrance, Calif., by 183 pins for his third title of the 2011-12 season and the 16th PBA Regional title of his career.



In the ongoing battle for senior supremacy in the PBA Central and Midwest Regions, Harry Sullins of Chesterfield Twp., Mich., defeated Curt Aemisegger of Wauconda, Ill., 259-174, to win the PBA Midwest/Central Brunswick Zone-Hawthorn Senior Open presented by Allstate Insurance in Vernon Hills, Ill., Sunday. Sullins won $1,500 along with his third Midwest/Central Senior Regional title of the 2011-12 season. Sullins’ chief rival, Kenny Parks of Hammond, Ind., finished fourth in his bid for his sixth regional win of the current season.



The only event on the Oct. 14-16 PBA Regional schedule is the South Region’s NAS Open at NAS Freedom Lanes in Jacksonville, Fla.



PBA Regional competitors will continue to bowl for points through Feb. 26 to try to qualify for the 2012 Dick Weber PBA Playoffs. The top 16 points leaders in the PBA’s East, South, Central, Midwest, Southwest and West/Northwest Regions will earn berths in the new Xtra Frame Tour event which will be held March 30-April 1 at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.



All first-time PBA Regional title winners also become eligible for the season-ending PBA Tournament of Champions.

HUGH MILLER SHOWS PROWESS IN AMATEUR BASEBALL LEAGUE

Seven-time PBA Tour champion and two-time Senior Tour champion Hugh Miller of Seattle has recently become a two-sport star after competing in the Puget Sound Senior Baseball League the past two seasons.



Competing in both the 50+ Senior division and a 35-50 year division over the summer, Miller had batting averages of .316 and .417, respectively, playing for the Solar Sox and Diamond Jacks. He played several positions but mainly in the outfield. He also was called on to pitch but readily admits he throws more strikes bowling than pitching.



Miller started playing senior league baseball when a couple of his friends on his Tuesday night bowling league invited him to try out. Miller won his second PBA Senior Tour title in the season-ending 2011 Senior Dayton Classic.



STERN NIXES A WORLD SERIES RETURN TRIP FOR “SCOTT THE ENGINEER”

Scott "The Engineer" Salem of the Howard Stern Show on SiriusXM radio will not get the chance to better his 2010 PBA World Series of Bowling performance. Salem’s request for time off to return to the WSOB was turned down on the radio show this week.



Salem, an avid 59-year-old league bowler in New Jersey, grabbed a lot of attention for surviving the 2010 WSOB. He had never before bowled 60 games in five days and finished in 222nd place – short of his goal of finishing in the top 200 – but he recorded his best round in his final round, finishing 162nd on the Shark lane condition.
