Are you old enough to remember the good old days of Halloween night -- how exciting it was to dress up in home made costumes, make a mask out of a brown paper bag, grab your decorated paper bag for your treats, then head out with siblings and friends to prowl the neighborhood for treats? Things were a lot more safe back then. We only went to homes of the people we knew, and in our area everyone knew each other. We could trust them if they gave us homemade cookies or candy apples, or invited us in for hot cider or chocolate.
It is not the same now. In most neighborhoods of today, people do not know the neighbors across the street or down the street. Too many incidents of poisoned candy, or razors, or needles stuck in candy bars, are reported. Too many children are at risk of malicious attacks.
Protect your children and organize a neighborhood watch. Invite neighbors to a meeting for those who will allow trick-or-treaters at their homes. Devise a plan to protect your kids and let them know which houses are safe to go to. Make sure there are chaperones for each group of trick-or-treaters.
There are so many things you can do to protect your children. Start a Halloween Safety Group in your neighborhood and you will be surprised at how many safety tips and ideas your group will come up with to make sure your kids come home safely.
Have a safe and worry-free Halloween.
