Halloween is almost here and it can a busy time of year at orthodontists’ offices, because patients can't resist eating the foods that can cause damage to their braces and potentially lengthen treatment time.
The American Association of Orthodontists (AAO), as part of October’s National Orthodontic Health Month, provides the following tips to help orthodontic patients avoid "tricky treats" and enjoy the holiday:
• Look for softer treats, such as soft chocolate or peanut butter cups, or
melt-in-your-mouth foods.
• Candies that are sticky, chewy, hard or crunchy should be avoided by
anyone wearing braces or retainers.
• Steer clear of the following treats, or recipes with these ingredients:
caramel; hard and chewy candies; nuts; licorice; taffy; jelly beans; hard
pretzels; bubblegum; popcorn (including unpopped kernels); taco chips; and
ice.
