In our study of tatting we try to preserve vintage tatting patterns. We also modernize the instructions and the method of tatting. We prepare diagrams with the ds counts listed so that the language of the pattern will not be a problem for anyone.

One of our ongoing projects is tatting new models and preparing new directions for all the patterns in the booklet "Forty Original Designs in Tatting by Nellie Hall Youngburg 1921." And we bring to the attention of tatters, names that might otherwise be forgotten, i.e., "Frivolités" by Miss Johanna Rubli from Zug, Switzerland was published in 1917. Entredeux pattern. And the Flower Basket by Lotte Winter-Leipzig from Emmy Liebert's Bk 1 which was rewritten by Elke Grotegut. Jane Weaver's tatting from 1873 is remembered from her insertion pattern.
If you are a collector of vintage tatting patterns, or spot a public domain booklet posted, please send the info in. If you are interested in preparing new models of old patterns, please volunteer. And if you are skilled in rewriting old-fashioned instructions or drawing diagrams, your help would be welcome.
In the vintage lace sample posted above there are some surprising elements. Please take a moment and study the construction.
1. Note the needle lace sewn into the center of the pieces and into the centers of the larger rings.
2. Note the lack of chains. There are bare thread spaces between the rings.
3. Note the line of rings which gives the impression of today's split ring formation.
4. Note the use of modern joined picots (on the wheels seen on the left and right sides of the photo.)
5. Note the use of the tied or sewn picots, also.
These details tell us that this is a piece of lace made during a transition period. The modern join is known, but the previous method of sewing the individuals motifs together by the picots is still used.
