HUSTEDS BECOME FIRST FATHER-SON PBA DOUBLES CHAMPIONS;
REIGNING PBA WORLD CHAMP TOM SMALLWOOD WINS FINAL TUNE-UP EVENT
Corey Husted and his PBA Hall of Fame father Dave Husted of Milwaukie, Ore., defeated Rob Cline and Sean Heath of Spokane, Wash., 511-475, to become the first father-son team to win a Professional Bowlers Association doubles title in the PBA Northwest Regional Doubles at Stardust Lanes in Walla Walla, Wash., on Oct. 16.

For Corey Husted, it was his first PBA Northwest Regional title which makes him eligible to bowl against his father in the $1 million PBA Tournament of Champions at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas in January. Dave Husted, a 14-time PBA Tour champion and three-time U.S. Open winner, has now won 26 PBA regional titles. They split a $2,500 first prize.

The Husteds defeated another PBA Hall of Famer, Ernie Schlegel, and his partner, Rob Edwards, Vancouver, Wash., 3-2, in their best-of-five-game semifinal round. Cline and Heath edged Jeremy McElliott and Robert Harvey of Boise, Idaho, 3-2, in the other semifinal round match.

In the PBA Midwest Region, reigning PBA World Championship winner Tom Smallwood of Saginaw, Mich., defeated Dale Traber of Cedarburg, Wis., 279-240, to win the Maple Lanes Midwest Open in Waterloo, Iowa, on Oct. 17, in a final tune-up prior to the start of the PBA World Series of Bowling on Oct. 25 in Las Vegas.

The title was Smallwood’s first of the year in the PBA Midwest Region and his second career PBA Regional title. He also earned $2,400. In a semifinal round featuring all past/present PBA Tour exempt players, Smallwood defeated Tim Mack of Indianapolis, 258-188, and Traber edged younger brother Dave Traber of Hebron, Ill., 232-221.

In Jacksonville, Fla., Stoney Baker of Canton, Ga., defeated Chris Collins of Savannah, Ga., 236-202, to win the PBA South Region Jacksonville Open at NAS Freedom Lanes on Sunday. The title was Baker’s first title of the year and the 22nd of his regional career. He earned $2,500 along with his title.

Baker defeated Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour player Andres Gomez, Orlando, Fla., 219-203, and Collins edged former exempt tour competitor Randy Weiss of Columbia, S.C., 269-257, to set up the championship match.

In the PBA Southwest Region, Jesse Buss of Wichita, Kan., defeated David Anthony of Austin, Texas, 252-247, to win the Dallas Orthopedic Trauma Surgeons Open at AMF Richardson Bowl in Richardson, Texas, Sunday.

The title was Buss’s first in the PBA Southwest and the second of his career. The former PBA Southwest Region Rookie of the Year won his other title in the PBA Central Region. He struck twice in the final frame to edge Anthony for the $2,450 first prize.

In the PBA East Region, Tom Baker of King, N.C., threw a strike on his first shot in the 10th frame to win the Insurance Market Senior Open at Bryan’s Bowling Center in Laurel, Md., on Oct. 17 by 21 pins over Soul Moorer of Dover, Del. Baker averaged 235 and won six of his 12 matches to finish with a 20-game total of 4,841 pins, including match play bonus pins, to claim a $1,500 first prize.

Baker, who had led the entire event, entered the position round with a 135-pin lead over Moorer, but a pair of 7-10 splits by the four-time PBA Senior Tour Player of the Year and a 277 final game by Moorer forced Baker to mark in the 10th frame for the win.

The two-month chase for PBA Playoffs qualifying positions in six regional areas will continue Nov. 5-7 with a PBA South Region tournament at Village Lanes in Gloucester, Va.; a joint Southwest/West Region event at Bowlero Lanes in Farmington, N.M., and a Northwest Region event at Bowl Arena Lanes in Fort Lewis, Wash. Qualifying tournaments in the PBA East, South, Central, Midwest, Southwest and combined West/Northwest Regions will continue through Nov. 30.

ADDITIONAL ROSTER CHANGES MADE FOR WORLD SERIES; ONE OPENING IS AVAILABLE
Caesar Brannon II, Midland, Texas; Vinny D’Ambrosio III, Staten Island, N.Y.; Alan Mojado, Fallbrook, Calif.; Mark Fennell, Bonney Lake, Wash., and Michael Fujita, Las Vegas, will be in the starting field for the PBA World Series of Bowling Monday in Las Vegas as a result of vacancies created by late withdrawals.

Because six players have withdrawn from the Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour’s opening event of the 2010-11 season, the “waiting list” has been exhausted and one opening for the event now exists on a “first-come” basis. PBA members who would like to bowl in the World Series should contact Barb Wilt at the PBA website or call her at the PBA office in Seattle at 206-654-6025.
