The response to a recent book review, "Tat Mats" by Karey Solomon, has been great! Well known for her series of books, this new one is a charmer. Karey appreciated all the comments and has decided to share a pattern from the book with us. This is the "Simple Dahlia" flower coaster found on pg. 4.
This mat reaches a size of about 5" in width if tatted in large thread, i.e., size 3 Cordonnet. It works in one color, two colors, variegated and ombre thread choices. In structure this is a large Catherine Wheel with a round center ring and a simple chain edging. Fill one shuttle and leave it attached to the ball (or use two shuttles or thread one needle and ball.)
Abbreviations:
R = ring
CH = chain
- or p = picot
mp = mock picot
+ = join
CW = Catherine wheel join
dnrw = do not reverse work
cont. = continue in same manner around
Please review the Catherine Wheel Join before starting the Dahlia.
Center ring R = 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 clr ring dnrw, mp (tie both threads together or do a lock stitch, first half tatted, second half wrapped which locks the thread in place.) Climb out into chain.
All the following joins are Catherine Wheel joins where you are joining to a picot on the row below.
CH 2 + (join to p of center ring) cont.
CH 3 + (join to the picot space above a previous picot join of previous round), cont.
CH 4 + (join to picot space on previous round) cont.
CH 5 + (join to picot space on previous round) cont.
CH 3 - 4 + (join to picot space on previous round) cont.
CH 4 + (join to picot or picot space on previous round) cont.
CH 4 + (join to picot space on previous round),
continue with chain 5 + (join to picot space on previous round) alternately cont.
CH 5 + (join to picot or picot space on previous round) cont.
CH 3 - 3 + (join to picot or picot space on previous round) cont.
CH 3 + (join to picot or picot space on previous round),
continue with chain 4 + (join to picot space on previous round) alternately cont.
CH 4 + (join to picot space on previous round) cont. Do not cut thread.
Outer Edging
CH 4 - 3 - 3 - 4 + (join to picot or picot space on previous round)
CH 4 + (join to last picot on previous chain) 3 - 3 - 4 + (join to picot or picot space on previous round) cont.
Last CH 4 + (join to last picot on previous chain) 3 - 3 + (join to first picot of first chain on this the last round) 4 + (join to start of row and secure ends.)
