Two Color Cluny Petal Tatting Tutorial by Dagmar Pezzuto

Using two shuttles, tat pattern up to the cluny. The regular cluny begins with wrapping the loom around the hand.

However, in the two color cluny, the middle loom thread is replaced with a floss threader. The floss threader is used later to pull the tail of the second color into the back of the cluny petal to hide the end when the petal is completed.

Introduce second color for the cluny by placing it on a blunt tapestry needle or use a regular tatting needle.

Begin weaving the cluny petal. To weave the thread take the shuttle/needle over/under the loom threads depending on the direction of the pass. The directions will state how many passes are needed for each one. One pass means taking the first color thread from the right to the left and back to the right again. With two color cluny petals, one pass for the second color means taking it from the left to the right and back to the left again. Continue alternating colors, directions and increasing or decreasing to create the desired form of the petal.

When the tatted cluny petal has reached the desired length, the tails of each color are inserted through the floss threader. Pull tail through and secure cluny.

Starting a Pattern You do not have to start exactly where the directions say. Remember that older patterns told us often to cut and tie when it was completely unnecessary. Tatters today try to modernize patterns by starting with a starter picot, or using a mock picot to climb out into a split ring/chain.
