This Large Square Medallion is found on (page 14 in Anne Orr's Classic Tatting Patterns)
2 (or 3) shuttles
R = ring Ch = chain, RW = reverse work, DNRW = do not reverse work.
+ = join, - = picot, RODS = reverse order double stitch, lppr = to last picot previous ring
Center:
R: 9 - 9 RW; Ch: 12 RW
R: 9 - 9 RW; Ch: 12 RW
R: 9 - 9 RW; Ch: 12 RW
R: 9 - 9 RW; Ch: 12 Join to base of first ring and chain, cut, tie, hide ends
OR
Begin with a chain, using a large paper clip to hold open a picot, tat around alternating rings and chains.
After tatting the fourth chain, join to the small picot held open by the paper clip, then tat the 4th ring as a split ring (9/9). Climb into the 'first row' with a split ring (6 - 6/6 - 6).
Continue the row with a chain. Tat ONLY the first of the 2 rings when climbing out with a split ring - you will tat the second one at the END of the row. Your first split ring will be the ring located at #. Continue with the directions for the first row. You will probably need a third shuttle for the 'motifs' if you use this method.

[NOTE: Depending on whether you're looking at the medallion from the front or the back, this will shift the rest of the 'motif' left of 'center' or right of 'center.' From the 'front' of the medallion, you will join to the first picot to the LEFT of the dangling threads/shuttles. If you are cutting the thread at the end of each row, you can join to the p of the chain between the 2 'single' rings of the center. Your motif will be shifted the other way, that's all. It works both ways.]
Skip 2 chains (picots) and tat another motif. You will end up with 4 'corners' on a previously-round medallion.
2nd Row:

If you have climbed out of Row 1 with a split chain, you will begin Row 2 at ###. Continue around from there, but keep in mind you will need to backtrack and tat the 'beginning' of the row before you cut the thread.
Your first ring (at the ###) will be a split ring: (5 - 6/6 - 5). You will need to RW
and switch shuttles to tat the ring on the left side of the center of the 'shamrock' - this is the ring BEFORE ### in the pattern (5 + (to first p previous ring) 5 - 5 - 5) BE SURE TO TAT THIS RING RODS, since you are on the back side of the work and everything ELSE will be on the front side but this one ring.
RW again, switch back to the other shuttle, and tat the last ring of the 'shamrock' (5 + (to first p previous ring) 5 - 5 - 5). Continue with the pattern until you have tatted all the way around the outside of the square.
NOTE on the chains in Row 2: You may want to experiment with using a half-double-double stitch or even a double-double stitch on those long chains (12-12 and 14-14) in the last row. I liked the way it looked with a half-double-double stitch better than with regular double stitches. For my tatting tension, the chains were smoother and seemed to 'sit' better under the 'shamrocks.'
