November 1 2010 Public Health Newsletter
November brings cooler weather and the hustle and bustle of the Holiday season. Many people work extra hours or get a part time job to earn money for Holiday gifts. People tend to take less care of themselves during this busy time.
A Few Tips to Stay Healthy
It is important that you eat as healthy as possible and take time each day to relax, even if it is only for a few minutes. This time of year also brings colds and flu. Wash your hands frequently and carry hand sanitizer. Most stores provide sanitizing wipes to wipe down shopping carts. I carry a purse pack just in case none are available.
If you share a phone with others at work, wipe the handset down frequently. Keep a package of sanitizing wipes near the phone for convenience. When you wash your hands in a public restroom, make sure you use a paper towel to turn off the sink. I use a paper towel to open the door as I am leaving as well. I know this sounds a bit overboard, however, as a student, I swabbed one bathroom for a microbiology project. The amount of bacteria I discovered would blow your mind!
If you are using bleach to sanitize any surface area, make sure you allow the bleach to air dry. I know this will leave a residue. Once it is completely dry, use a cloth or paper towels to wipe off the residue. Bleach is more effective if you allow it to air dry.
Add a Vitamin C supplement to your diet. During this time of the year, people tend to eat more unhealthy foods and consume fewer products with Vitamin C. A good supplement will keep your immune system healthy.
Above all, do not forget to perform your monthly self-breast exam! This is very important as early detection may save your life.
Be safe and take care of yourself during this busy season!
