Autism Spectrum Disorders

November 12 2006 Autism Spectrum Disorders Newsletter

Greetings Everyone -

Today on Animal Planet is a Prehistoric Park Marathon. We are taping two episodes since we have the others already on tape. Nicholas is very excited and has spent the long holiday weekend drawing pictures in his Illustory. This is a book he is making that we send in to get bound. He wants to do the Pet Calendar one next.

I am busy preparing for an Emergency IEP that I requested last month for Matthew that is tomorrow morning. He has been leaving his classroom to run on the playground and then gets to the gate to leave the premises. It also has happened while at lunch and during OT. Therefore his Behavior Support plan needs to be changed to reflect this.

I also attended a presenation on Additional Adult Assistance, which is known as AAA and the new term for aides, although it is now a service and not one person attached to the child. It used to be called one on one aide, then it was TSA and now AAA.

I do not like the way the current IEP states under additional suppports the following - Appropriate trained staff for behaviors.

I was told by the AP that this is the district standard wording. I am busy at their website looking at memos trying to find the wording to use for a contingency plan for when the aide is on break, lunch or absent, as these are the times Matthew has left the room.

I also believe they are not helping him become independent and will be meeting with AAC and SLP on Tuesday to go over how the Cheap Talk Device has been working the past month. It was during that last observation that I noticed the antecedents to his behavior as the aide went on break and left Matthew sitting there waiting on teacher for prompts.

Afer my meetings this week I will be doing an article on the changing role of the one to one aide with resources I am compiling, plus I taped that presentation and will be transcribing it. The key point was that the assistance is to help the child become more independent.
