TENSIONS BETWEEN BELMONTE, RASH LEAD TO HEART-TO-HEART TALK
World Series of Bowling spectators noticed that the Jason Belmonte and Sean Rash weren¡¯t warming up to each other in the wake of last summer¡¯s ¡°bottlegate¡± confrontation¡and because both were bowling at an extremely high level, they wound up assigned to the same pairs of lanes for much of the competition through the first five days.
While the two rivals did their best to avoid each other, a minor snit over filling out each other¡¯s scoring recaps surfaced, adding to tensions. But after five consecutive days of butting heads, Belmonte and Rash got together and had a heart-to-heart talk in an effort to put their differences behind them.
How the rivalry plays out will be visible to the world when the pair square off in the opening match of the World Bowling Tour Finals presented by the PBA. As the No. 2 and No. 3 qualifiers in the WBT series, they will meet in the first telecast of the PBA season, airing Sunday, Dec. 4, at 1 p.m. ET.
With Rash making five consecutive World Series telecasts ¨C and Belmonte three shows ¨C the two players will be on the lanes together in the Chameleon, Shark and possibly the PBA World Championship finals.
¡ñ Speaking of ESPN telecasts, five World Series players will make their national PBA television debuts. Three are international players: England¡¯s Stu Williams (Bayer Viper Open) and Dom Barrett (Scorpion Open), and Venezuela¡¯s Ildemaro Ruiz (Viper). Ruiz also will appear in the Chameleon Open and all three qualified for the PBA World Championship finals. The other two are former Wichita State University stars ¨C Tour rookie Josh Blanchard of Gilbert, Ariz., and eight-year Tour veteran Nathan Bohr of Wichita who secured his first TV appearance by finishing 16th in the World Championship cashers¡¯ round by 31 pins over Rhino Page of Dade City, Fla.
¡ñ A new rule allows PBA players to use their cell phones to ¡°Tweet¡± and post comments on their Twitter and Facebook accounts during competition, giving their fans up-to-the-minute insight into what¡¯s going on during World Series competition.
