Further Your Diamond Knowledge
Diamonds are made up almost entirely of carbon. The stones are formed deep below the Earth's surface by tremendous heat and high pressure.
Diamonds are carried to the surface by volcanic eruptions. We find diamonds in
the volcanic rock known as kimberlite. Once mined, the brilliant stones will
never grow back.
FYI
See Inside a Diamond
This Hot Science activities allow you to build a carbon atom out of quarks and electrons,
while the other interactive activity allows the reader to manipulate a diamond crystal, giving
it a three-dimensional look into how its carbon atoms are arranged.
