Hiking & Backpacking

November 2 2006 Hiking & Backpacking Newsletter

I will admit I've spent a few emergency nights out on what WAS to be a dayhike. Sometimes you just overestimate your own skill on a long hike, sometimes it starts blizzarding in April, and sometimes you have to take care of someone who got hurt. I've slept under bushes, in vault toilet "cabins", and under low rock overhangs using a trashbag, my rain jacket and the daypack for a sleeping bag. (Good to note - you will never freeze to death if you have a nice, thick, black trashbag tucked in every pack you hike with).

It helps to have some food along. Extra food, packed with fat and calories, for that just-in-case emergency. Make up a little stuff sack with these cheap goodies and stick it in the bottom of your pack for every hike longer than a couple of miles.

Emergency Trail Food
I always have a few items stashed in case I have to stay out an extra night, or if some emergency comes up. Anyone who spends time in the outdoors would be a fool not to have a "little something" stashed away.
