November 25 2005 Art Appreciation Newsletter
Henri Matisse is best known for his paintings of rooms filled with brightly colored furnishings. Textiles greatly influenced Matisse's work. Drawn from his personal collection of fabrics, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in NY exhibited until September 2005 Matisse's paintings, drawings, and cutouts alongside his inspirational fabrics.
Matisse was fascinated by his fellow artists and personally owned works by Van Gogh, Gauguin, and Cezanne ("The Bathers"). This painting would later influence Matisse's paintings, "La Joie de Vivre" and "La Danse." There were actually 2 versions of "La Danse." One resides at the Barnes Collection outside of Philadelphia and the other at the Musuem of Modern Art in Paris.
