Happily I have two new students starting to learn how to tat this next week. They are so anxious to begin that they are coming to see me instead of going out for Black Friday holiday shopping. Now, that is dedication! As I scheduled a time and day for them, one of them made a comment that struck me as important. She said she had been considering what kind of a legacy she was going to leave behind.

These words are still resonating for me today. Recently we have lost some tatters from our online tatting class and this week alone two tatters' mothers(in law) passed also. Mother Steckman who passed this week left behind a fine loving family and many dear friends. But she did not do handwork so there is no heirloom to pass down. My own mother was a police officer and besides her family and friends there is no handwork to treasure. My grandmother drove a gravel truck for 27 years but she never learned to sew a seam. It is not until I consider my great-grandmother and my great-great-grandmother and grand-aunts that I find handiwork preserved to pass on. They created knitted lace as well as many items of household linens, embroideries, crocheted items and hand-painted china.

Leaving behind a good family and friends says a lot for a person's character. But somehow I seem to want some little something to hold to, to treasure, to hide away wrapped in tissue. I so treasure the hand made ornaments of my childhood. Handmade anything is to be cherished these days. But I have decided to make a renewed effort to leave behind not only tatted pieces but also tatters.

Let my legacy be these next two tatters who begin next week on a journey with a lifetime of pleasure. Let them thrive and teach countless new tatters and share the joy of lacemaking.
