PBA WORLD SERIES gARENAh TO INTRODUCE STUB LANE FOR PRACTICE
The special Brunswick bowling lane installation in South Point Exhibition Hall A in Las Vegas that will house the ESPN-televised finals of all six GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IV events will include a change this year with the introduction of a stub lane for use in practice between stepladder matches, PBA Commissioner Tom Clark has announced.
In addition to the two lanes that will be used for the actual competition, Clark said the shortened lane will be built in an off-camera area by the Brunswick crew.
gWhen you conduct stepladder finals, there is a significant dynamic of lane conditions changing by the time the top qualifier returns to the lanes,h Clark said. gThe advantage of being the top qualifier, and only having to bowl one match, is diminished because the player who progresses up the stepladder has a much better opportunity to see how the conditions are changing.
gThis year, the winner of each match will not be able to practice on TV pair after the game,h Clark continued. gOnly the oncoming player will be allowed to practice on the TV pair. The player who is continuing in the competition will go to the stub lane to stay loose. Reducing the amount of practice on the TV pair also will help maintain the integrity of the lane conditioning pattern.
gI want everyone to understand how important the integrity of the competition is to us,h he added. gThere are enough other situations that are not ideal when you involve television, such as moving to an arena instead of being in the bowling center where qualifying was held. Our goal is to manage what we can in the interest of fairness and integrity; the addition of the stub lane is a significant step in accomplishing that goal.h
Brunswick has been a long-time partner in building arena installations for the PBA. For this yearfs World Series, the arena installation will include Brunswick Pro Lanes, GS-X pinsetters, Frameworx ball lifts and racks, and an Envoy lane conditioning machine will be used to apply the oiling patterns.
Three World Series telecasts will be conducted in the South Point arena setting on Saturday, Nov. 10 (at 10 a.m., 1 and 4 p.m.), and three more finals will be conducted on Sunday, Nov. 11 (at noon, 2 and 5 p.m.). BELMONTE OUT-DUELS RASH TO WIN AUSTRALIAN MASTERS TITLE
Australian two-handed star Jason Belmonte, responding to the cheers of his home country fans, rallied for a stunning 2-1 victory over American rival Sean Rash to win the AMF Australian Masters Saturday at AMF Rooty Hill Bowling Center in Sydney, Australia.
After Belmonte won the first game in the best-of-three title match by a 174-172 margin, Rash tied the match with a 255-223 win in game two. Rash then started the decisive final game with six strikes, but lost his momentum and Belmonte struck out for a 256-243 win to claim the $25,000 first prize.
Belmonte also earned a PBA International Tour title, his fifth career title, in the final WTBA World Bowling Tour qualifying event leading into the GEICO PBA World Series of Bowling IV, which gets underway Friday at South Point Bowling Center in Las Vegas.
In the all-American womenfs title match, Chicagofs Diandra Asbaty swept Californiafs Missy Parkin, 204-200, 221-192.
The Australian Masters didnft alter the final standings for the WTBAfs Bayer Advanced Aspirin World Bowling Tour Finals presented by the PBA, which will be decided on Saturday, Nov. 10, at South Point Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. Reigning menfs champion Mika Koivuniemi of Finland will enter the three-man stepladder finals as top qualifier and will bowl the winner of a match between No. 2 Mike Fagan and No. 3 Chris Barnes. Rash finished fourth in the two-year cumulative points race.
The WBT womenfs finals will feature three PBA members: Missy Parkin secured her top qualifying position with her second-place finish. Kelly Kulick remains No. 2 and Liz Johnson is No. 3. Defending womenfs champion Carolyn Dorin-Ballard was fourth.
PBA REGIONAL ROUNDUP: KALFAS WINS JOINT CENTRAL/MIDWEST TITLE
Riga Kalfas of Florence, Ky. defeated Eugene McCune of Munster, Ind., 227-220, to win the joint PBA Central/Midwest Region Star Lanes Classic presented by Sysco Foods Services of Indianapolis at Star Lanes in Lafayette, Ind., on Sunday, Oct. 28. Along with his 16th career PBA Regional title, Kalfas earned $2,400.
œ In Glassboro, N.J., Chris Fedden of Albany, N.Y., defeated Kevin Quinn of Bordertown, N.J., 236-204, to win the $1,500 first prize and his third PBA Regional title in the PBA East Regionfs Dominick DiCicco Memorial Senior Open at Glassboro (N.J.) Bowling and Entertainment on Sunday.
œ Next up on the regional agenda are the PBA West Regionfs All Region Singles and Doubles which will take place as part of WSOB IV at South Point in Las Vegas Nov. 9-11.
Also on the regional calendar for November: over the Nov. 2-4 weekend, the PBA Midwest and Central Regions will conduct the Victory Lanes Senior Open sponsored by Allstate Insurance in Kankakee, Ill., and the PBA South Region will conduct the Gloucester (Va.) Open at Village Lanes. Events slated for Nov. 9-10 include the PBA South Region Gastonia (N.C.) Open at George Pappas Liberty Lanes. Over the Nov. 16-18 weekend, the Central Region will host the La-Z-Boy/Monroe Sport Center Non-Champions Open in Monroe, Mich.; the PBA East will run the Bryanfs Bowling Center Senior Open presented by The Insurance Market in Laurel, Del.; the PBA Northwest Doubles is set for Stardust Lanes in Walla Walla, Wash., and the PBA Southwest and West Regions will team up for the Farmington (N.M.) Open at Bowlero Lanes.
Concluding November will be the PBA Southwest Region Beaumont (Texas) Open presented by Storm at Crossroad Bowling Center, Nov. 23-25, and the PBA South Region Tarheel Lanes Senior Open in Hendersonville, N.C., Nov. 30-Dec. 2.

WISEMAN SCHOLARSHIP EVENT RAISES $8,000
The inaugural Danny Wiseman Junior Scholarship Bowling Tournament, held on Oct. 14 at AMF Country Club Lanes in Baltimore, fielded 121 entries (74 in handicap division and 47 scratch bowlers), and generated more than $8,000 for USBC SMART scholarship funds.
