Flu Prevention Tips
For librarians the advice to avoid crowds is unrealistic. How can we avoid getting sick during prime germ season?
- Wash your hands often. Sheree Welshimer recommends avoiding "antibacterial soaps because they are no better and may promote drug-resistant bacteria." Welshimer recommends washing for at least 15-20 seconds. Singing two rounds of Twinkle-Twinkle Little Star is a good way to ensure that you have washed long enough. I make a point to wash my hands after handling money.
- Use mouthwash or salt water during the day. Shoot for twice a day to flush out flu germs.
- Drink plenty of warm liquids (coffee, tea, broth) to flush viruses out of the throat and into the stomach where they cannot survive.
- Clean the keyboards! Dr. James M. Steckelberg of the Mayo Clinic has stated that, "It's generally believed that cold and flu viruses live longer on nonporous surfaces — such as plastic, metal or wood." The easiest way to clean keyboards, door knobs, and tables, and other sufaces is with alcohol or disinfecting wipes. My husband is a diabetic who receives small alcohol wipes with his supplies. We use the wipes on the keyboards and mice at the library. You can also use guaze pads, cotton ball, or cotton swabs with alcohol. It doesn't take much and is inexpensive.

Fat issues loom large in our culture, as it were, and kids pick up messages about how they should look that batter their confidence at every turn. Literature for young people should be one place where kids don't find themselves mocked, dismissed, or shamed. I am not talking about books that deal directly with weight; it's the books that don't realize they are reinforcing negative stereotypes that concern me.

Passagiato Con Me
Let's take a passagiato* through fashion and current events. I love fashion, but am not a slave to labels. This blog was started after reading one more fashion magazine that marginalized conservatives. The attitude was that conservative women are stupid and we wear ugly clothes.
So, here I am carving out my own space. I'm not alone and am not in competition with the big magazines or other bloggers.
Where am I politically? I've been a registered Independent since the 1980 election (you can guess my age from there) when I supported John B. Anderson. Why? He supported the Equal Rights Amendment. I used to describe myself as a 'Conservative Liberal' before the phrase moderate was bandied about. It was Bill Clinton that finally pushed me into my conservative identity.
I love clothes. I love the art of clothing. I don't have one specific style. You are just as likely to find me in a silk shirt as a rag sweater. If this blog speaks to you than in the words of my best TV boyfriend, Tim Gunn, let's "make it work."
