The countdown to the end of the year has begun.
These days everyone deplores the crash commercialism of the holidays. A season of love and joy and peace is corrupted by the need to buy, buy, buy. I used to be very negative about that. But during the last 20 years I have softened my thoughts. The recent recessions, the wars, the famines, the droughts and the terrorism have placed everyone in difficult positions. I wish so often that I could reach out and wave my "magic" shuttle and make everything better. But I can't.
So, I continue in my small way of sharing my love of tatting with everyone I can. Everyone needs to make a living and sales is how it is done. So whether you buy gifts or whether you make them just wrap them with love and deliver them with hugs.
I love history, too, especially the history of tatting. I am delighted to share with you a book I have just received as a gift from M L Martin. It is "The Ladies Book of the Month" by Madame Elise 1987. And today it has been added to BellaOnline.com's extensive list of free tatting books posted online. You can find the entire list here: http://www.bellaonline.com/subjects/3137.asp
M L Martin has also found two other vintage publications:
The Ladies' Handbook of Embroidery on Muslin, Lacework and Tatting, ed. by An American Lady (1844)
THE LADIES' WORK-TABLE BOOK, by H.G. Clarke and Co. (1843)
There is a small fee for copies which are available direct:
M. Leigh Martin, akamoraih@gmail.com, www.SomethingUndertheBed.com
And Karey Solomon has a great fundraiser in progress. She has the first twenty years of "Tatting Times" on disk for sale for a great price. Over 400 patterns are included! Karey was aided in this project by M L Martin and other volunteers. She's donating the money from the sales to a really good charity. The disc is available direct: threads@empacc.net
Since the last newsletter two more angels have appeared. You can find them on the lesson list for the Online Tatting Class: http://www.georgiaseitz.com/2016/2016index.html. BTW, The Online Tatting Class is free and fun, all are welcome. Just let me know if you would like to register. We teach regular lessons and beginners lessons, too.
And on that same page, you will find a link to the sweetest pair of angel earrings shared by the great designer, Nina Libin, of beanile.com.
May we all find peace this year.
Here's the latest article from the Tatting site at BellaOnline.com.
Mignonette Tatting Adeline Cordet This pattern is #550 on page 8 of "Tatting", by Adeline Cordet Book 5. It may serve as an edging or an insertion. It begins with a regular all rings strip with bare thread spaces between the rings. The following rows are tatted in a light and airy method call "mignonette."
