The year has brought many highlights in the field of art, too numerous to mention in a newsletter.
The American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens died one hundred years ago. The first sculptor to design an American coin (the 1907 Twenty Dollar Gold Coin), Saint-Gaudens was truly the "Master of American Sculpture."
His "Shaw Memorial," a public monument on Boston Common was brought to life in the movie "Glory" with Morgan Freeman.
The colossal "Diana" (1891-93) that once stood poised atop Madison Square Garden now reside at the top of a staircase at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.
And speaking of Philadelphia, they have much to be grateful for besides being the home of the Liberty Bell. The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Philadelphia Museum of Art, and art lovers (myself included) across the world, raised enough money to keep Thomas Eakins' "The Gross Clinic" (1875) in Philadelphia. For that was the city that inspired Eakins and where the painting has always called home.
I may not be Oprah, but these are my picks for art related charitable contributions.
