PBA WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING EXCEEDS MILLION DOLLAR PAYOUT

The third PBA World Series of Bowling provided PBA members and non-members more opportunity for prize money ($1,079,579), Xtra Frame exposure (117 hours of live coverage) and ESPN national television appearances (14) than any other event in PBA history. Overall, 315 bowlers entered WSOB events, including 204 in the PBA World Championship main event at South Point in Las Vegas, generating $281,105 in entry fees.

Out of the 315 players, 124 players (39.4%) cashed in at least one event. Money from sponsorships, host fees and other revenue sources other than entry fees accounted for nearly $800,000 of the overall prize fund. The $800 entry fee for the PBA World Championship generated a return of at least $10,000 for 31 players while 15 bowlers earned more than $20,000.

The following 30 players earned a spot in at least one of 14 ESPN WSOB nationally-televised shows beginning Sunday, Dec. 4 at 1 p.m. Eastern. In addition to the prize fund, players can earn additional incentives for each television appearance based on individual sponsor agreements.

Those who made one TV appearance were: Patrick Allen, Sandra Andersson, Chris Barnes, Josh Blanchard, Nathan Bohr, Ryan Ciminelli, Mike DeVaney, Carolyn Dorin-Ballard, Nina Flack, Jack Jurek, Brian Kretzer, Martin Larsen, Bill O'Neill, Mike Scroggins, Ryan Shafer, Tom Smallwood, Dave Wodka.

Those who made two appearances were: Dom Barrett, Norm Duke, Mika Koivuniemi, Wes Malott, Osku Palermaa, Ronnie Russell, Pete Weber and Stuart Williams.

Mike Fagan, Andres Gomez and Ildemaro Ruiz each appeared on three telecasts. Jason Belmonte and Sean Rash each made seven TV appearances, easily breaking the previous WSOB record of three shows.

XTRA FRAME TO AIR FREE PRE-, POST-GAME SHOWS STARTING WITH WBT FINALS

Xtra Frame, PBA’s official online bowling channel, will air free pre- and post-game shows for all 2011-12 PBA Tour finals, beginning Wednesday with a pre-game introduction to Sunday’s telecast of the GEICO World Bowling Tour Finals presented by the PBA.

Pre-game shows will be online on Wednesday afternoon preceding each Sunday telecast. A post-game show, featuring an interview with the tournament champion(s) and a discussion of equipment used during the finals, will be posted immediately after the telecast.

Xtra Frame subscribers also can access the archives within Xtra Frame for a recap of the individual tournaments leading up to the Sunday telecasts. For information on how to subscribe to Xtra Frame, visit pba.com and click on the Xtra Frame logo.

AUSTRALIAN COUPLE TRAVELS 7,900 MILES TO ATTEND WORLD SERIES OF BOWLING

Chris and Shirley Robinson of Brisbane, Australia, win the prize for most miles traveled to attend the PBA World Series of Bowling after making the 7,900-mile trek to Las Vegas. The Robinsons, who follow the PBA religiously on Xtra Frame (starting years ago when it was known as Strike Pass), flew halfway around the world and watched the World Series for its entire two-plus-week schedule.

“We both had a fantastic time,” Chris Robinson said, “and we’re hoping to make the trip again next year.”

DEREK WILLIAMS UP-ENDS HALL OF FAME BROTHER FOR SOUTHWEST REGIONAL WIN

Derek Williams of Groves, Texas, lost only three matches Sunday – two of them to his PBA Hall of Fame brother Mark Williams - but won the other nine to easily win the 10th annual PBA Southwest Region Beaumont Open at Crossroads Bowling Center in Beaumont, Texas.

Derek Williams also won the 2009 Beaumont event and finished second last year in the center owned by his older brother. Derek finished the event with a 25-game total of 5,712, including match play bonus pins, to claim the $2,500 first prize by 51 pins over Mark.

This weekend’s schedule includes the PBA South Regional Surfside Open at Surfside Lanes in Surfside Beach, S.C. The only event on the Dec. 9-11 calendar is Sands Regency and Ebonite-sponsored tripleheader at the National Bowling Stadium in Reno, including the Sands Regency Non-Champions Tournament, Tri-Regional Sands Regency Senior Open and Tri-Regional Sands Regency Open - all presented by Ebonite.

The final pre-holiday season regional event will be the PBA South Regional Waynesboro (Va.) Regular/Senior Doubles presented by Hammer at Wayne’s Lanes, Dec. 16-18. Regional competition will then resume in early January.

With the Feb. 26 deadline looming, all PBA Regional competitors continue to compile qualifying points toward the 2012 Dick Weber PBA Playoffs. The top 16 points leaders in the PBA’s East, South, Central, Midwest, Southwest and combined West/Northwest Regions will earn berths in the new Xtra Frame Tour event which will be held March 30-April 1 at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis.

All first-time PBA Regional title winners also become eligible for the season-ending PBA Tournament of Champions.
