A Flight of Angels
cover of A Flight of Angels by Martha Ess 2015

Martha Ess has just released a new book. "A Collection of Angelic Tatting Patterns" is a spiral bound paperback book of 32 pages, 8.5" x 11" in size. This well-known master tatter has prepared full color photos and diagrams for each pattern to delight and challenge all tatters.

The diagrams are clear and contain detailed information on the methods and direction of the tatting. And they are color-coordinated, too. As noted in the diagram, a single number inside a ring indicates that is the number of double stitches between each picot or join. Lines in color on the diagram indicate segments tatted separately or which need to be tatted in an alternate direction. Additional numbers marked in red show the order of progression in tatting.

This is my favorite angel in the book. I first saw it at The Palmetto Tat Days 2015 and just fell in love with the pattern. This angel is good for a learning exercise also. It uses long beaded picots along with beads on picots and beads on the core thread, too. Techniques needed include the regular ring, split ring, chains, regular joins and shuttle lock joins, too.

Martha Ess is the author and designer of several tatting books. She also shares her work in modernizing vintage patterns frequently. Below is sample. And, she does research on the history of tatting.

This page shows a sample of her work. It is Frau Tina Frauberger's "Schiffchenspitzen," figure 78. Revised by Martha Ess using modern tatting techniques like the split ring and mock picot.

Martha Ess has recently looked with new eyes at a very old tatting publication by Mrs. Cornelia and Miss Austin, "Tatting or Frivolité" and discovered there is more to a picot than we have previously realized.

A special book that all tatters would enjoy.

Note: This book was a gift to me from Martha and I am so pleased to add it to my reference library of tatting books. -G. Seitz.
