Work & Family

February 14 2007 Work & Family Newsletter

Happy Valentines Day everyone. If you don’t receive a valentine today, make your own special valentine minute. Read or re-read a good book, sit back with a cup of your favorite tea or coffee; call a friend, or pop in a DVD and enjoy an hour or so self-indulgence. My secret joy and indulgent moment is watching “Clifford the big red dog.”

My latest article focuses on the workplace. When everyday job pressure gets you down, count to ten, then make some changes.

*On the Job - Feeling Job Burnout?*
If you feel you’re on the verge of stressing too much because of your job, take a step back. You might be facing burnout.

*Volunteering - A Family Affair*
You can become a volunteer and have fun doing it. If you have thought about doing volunteer work but not sure which way to go, try arts and humanities.

*Quotes for Love and Inspiration *

Love may not make the world go round, but I must admit that it makes the ride worthwhile. - Sean Connery

*On Saying I am Sorry*

There once was a little boy who had a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, he must hammer a nail into the back of the fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Over the next few weeks, as he learned to control his anger, the number of nails hammered daily gradually dwindled. The youngster discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn’t lose his temper at all. He told his father about it, and the father suggested that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his temper.

One day, the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence. He said, “You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw it out. It won’t matter how many times you say ‘I’m sorry,’ the wound is still there.”

A reminder that it is “Random Acts of Kindness Week” Feb. 12-18. The idea is to do a simple thing to improve the lives of others. Take your neighbor's garbage out, put change in a stranger's expired parking meter, or take flowers to the local nursing home. When you help others, you help yourself, too. The family. We were a strange little band of characters trudging through life sharing diseases and toothpaste, coveting one another’s desserts, hiding shampoo, borrowing money, locking each other out of our rooms, inflicting pain and kissing to heal it in the same instant, loving, laughing, defending, and trying to figure out the common thread that bound us all together. —Erma Bombeck
