I hope you have read my article, "Pennsylvania Museum Wins Bid: Thomas Eakins’ The Gross Clinic." I wanted to bring attention to this significant Philadelphia painting and the museum that purchased it.
The Philadelphia Museum of Art, with its Neoclassical architecture, will be undergoing a ten-year expansion plan. Notable architect Frank O. Gehry was chosen to design the main building’s renovation and addition.
Plans are in place for an outdoor sculpture garden above a 440-car parking garage. Exhibition space with higher ceilings will accommodate large pieces of modern art. Galleries for American art and Asian art will be expanded. Also, a new education center, a larger auditorium and museum store, a restaurant and cafeteria at street level, and a visitor orientation center are also included in said plans.
If any of my readers felt badly for Wal-Mart heiress Alice Walton in losing the bid for the Eakins painting, feel relieved knowing that she purchased Edward Hopper’s "Hotel Window" (for $26.9 million) and Norman Rockwell’s "Breaking Home Ties" (for $15.4 million) for her upcoming Crystal Bridges museum in Arkansas.
At the time of the Philadelphia Museum of Art's "Developments" publication, individuals from thirty-nine states had made donations to fund "The Gross Clinic." If you haven't sent a check yet, reconsider being a part of the acquisition of this fine Philadelphia painting (and treasure).

Red is the Color of Love, Passion, and Henri Matisse
February is the month to think "red." Red is the color of the heart, thus love and passion. Henri Mattise was a famous 20th century French artist who painted with red as if it were the subject matter. I'll discuss his painting, "The Red Studio."
