ADD and Acetaminophen Use in Pregnancy

Well, it's thawed out a bit here and our snow has almost disappeared. There is a new cold front moving in, and it's supposed to be quite chilling! This week I read an article that sent chills right through me. It's about the use of acetaminophen during pregnancy. I encourage you to read the ScienceDaily piece or the article in JAMA Pediatrics. They are listed at the end of my article.

It's probable that Attention Deficit Disorder in children involves both nature and nurture. There is both a strong genetic component and the environment also plays a role. A research team from UCLA and Denmark reported in JAMA Pediatrics that there could be a link between acetaminophen and ADD. This could be a reason for the rise in people with Attention Deficit Disorder.

One thing that the mainstream press harps on is the rise of ADD diagnoses recently. They seem to feel like it's a fad diagnosis for parents and teachers who want to turn children into over-medicated zombies. Then, there are the doctors who are chasing a dollar by prescribing medications! The press seems to doubt the reality of a rise in ADD. As a teacher, I know too many kids who really, truly, do have ADD. I'll bet you do, too!
