Gift or Sachet Bag made from Vintage Handkerchief with Tatted Edging
 A hanky with a tatted lace edge, even an antique one or one with worn places or spots, can be folded and basted into a lovely sachet bag. Similar to the baby's bonnet saved for a bride's wedding, the hanky can be folded and used for a gift bag for the bridesmaids or a sachet holder for any occasion. Plain hankies can be embellished with tatted elements as a focal point on the front or an edging can be attached to the side and tops. Begin by ironing and lightly starching the hanky. Lay it out square and then fold the right edge over to left at the center point. Fold the left edge back to the center point on the other side. Press crisp folds. The hanky will now resemble a "z" folded flyer or brochure. Next fold that in half and press the fold. Go to each end and fold the tatted edging and about 3/4" of the hanky toward the center fold, press and pin in place. Pin the sides together also and stitch up the left and right sides nearly to the top. Stop where the seam meets the line of hanky that was folded down. Stitch only the inside layers together leaving the upper layer open so that a gathering cord may be inserted later. Baste the tatting at the hanky edge to the bag for a casing. Place cord end on bodkin or blunt tapestry needle and work it through the casing and around. Trim to size. Take a button with a shank and run both cords through it and tie the tails together. Slide the button to gather the hanky bag top. |
