To the British artist Damien Hirst, art, God, and love are connected. He has stated, "I'm having difficulties believing in art without believing in God." Hirst is best known for his installation art showing animals in formaldehyde. Is this really art? Hirst's lamb in formaldehyde is seen by the artist as a symbol of the sacrificed Christ. Is the "Lamb of God" theme taken too far?
I did in fact see Hirst's "Lamb" at the MFA in Boston. I was at first swept up in the excitement of seeing controversial art. Then I began to understand the artist's religious connection.
I also enjoyed "The Collector," which showed life as opposed to death. It was an enclosed structure that exhibited live butterflies as well as an animatronic man. I found this to be a very exciting exhibit.
My faith in artists was again restored. We trust that they will take us to a safe place where our minds and souls will be refreshed. I felt enlightened by Hirst's depiction of death and then life. Minimally, what is art if it is not controversial?
