A.E.K.'s "Hook and Eye" Tatted Insertion The Plain Dealer June 18, 1916

In the newsletter sent on Nov. 27, last year, a vintage pattern from Mrs. Warren's 1869-ish book was shared. In that pattern a ring was called a "tat!" That surprised me. I have found another odd term used in reference to a tatting pattern in a 1916 publication. Here, one A.E. K., tatter, shared a pattern of opposing rings connected by a chain. On the chain was one lonesome picot. This pattern was described as a "hook and eye" insertion.

Here's the pattern:

Using 2 shuttles begin insertion:
1. Ring 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw ; Chain 3 - 3 rw
[Ed's note: The direction stated that the tatter was to "spool 3 ds p 3 ds:. This assumed the tatter was making the chains with a ball thread instead of two shuttles.]

2. Ring 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw ; Chain 3 - 3 rw
3. *Ring 4 + (join to last picot of ring one) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw ; Chain 3 - 3 rw
4. Ring 4 + (join to last picot of ring two) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw ; Chain 3 - 3 rw
Repeat from * for length desired.

Also given were the directions for an edging:

Using 2 shuttles begin edging:
1. Ring 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw ; Chain 3 - 3 rw
2. Ring 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw ; Chain 3 - 3 rw
3. *Ring 4 + (join to last picot of ring one) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw ; Chain 3 - 3 rw
4. Ring 4 + (join to last picot of ring one) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw ; Chain 3 - 3 rw
Repeat from * for length desired.

This insertion would make a good bookmark with a ribbon run down the center up and under the chains.

Don't Flip the Stitch! Say What??
You practiced and studied hard to master the flip (tatting), to make the loop transfer and create the double stitch one half at a time. And now it says don't flip?
