My husband, brother and I all go to the local YMCA to work out 2-3 times a week. I have graduated from water walking to circling the gym at a sedate pace. And now I can ride three miles on the stationary bicycle. After my workouts I head to the locker room to change. Recently I overheard a heated discussion between two women of a certain age. They were arguing about St. Patrick.

One of them declared loudly that St. Pat was Irish. The other lady declared even louder that he was not! She was right. He's British! St. Patrick was born in Britain, kidnapped to Ireland, escaped after a number of years, returned to Britain and became a cleric. He then was called to return to Ireland and the rest is history. But, another odd note, St. Patrick has never been canonized by a Pope. So he is neither Irish nor a Saint. But no one seems to care about these details, he seems to be beloved by all for his actions.

One of the parables he used in teaching was illustrated by a three leaf clover or shamrock. Shamrocks has been associated with St. Patrick's day ever since.
