Original Edging Made of Tatting

An original edging for various uses is made of tatting. (One shuttle)
R 4 - 4 - 4 - 4 clr rw (leave 1/4" bare thread space after each ring)
Small R 4 - 4 clr rw
R 4 + 4 - 4 - 4 clr rw
Large R 5 + (join to the small ring) * 2 p, repeat from * for total of 6 picots, 5 clr rw
Small R 4 - 4 clr rw
R 4 + 4 - 4 - 4 clr rw
Large R 5 + (join to the small ring) * 2 p, repeat from * for total of 6 picots, 5 clr rw
R 4 + 4 - 4 - 4 clr rw 4 + 4 - 4 - 4 clr rw
Continue for length desired. Then using 2 shuttles or shuttle and ball attach thread to picot of ring CH 8 - 8 + (join to picot on next ring) 8 - 8 and continue for length needed.
Hen and Chicks lace is effective in color, too.

New Tatting Idea

"I have an idea which I have tried and found very good, and would like to pass on to any one who does or uses tatting.
It is this: Tatting, especially edges, which have no straight edge is very much improved by crocheting a row of chain stitches along the edge which is to be sewed on to material. It is also very much easier to sew as there is not so much danger of drawing to tight.
I add also that the pattern in tatting known as "Hens and Chickens" can be made wider and also used as beading is a row of plain rings with three picots is added to the one edge."

Exquisite Tatting Collar

This delicate work is very effective and a welcome present. (One shuttle leave an 18" tail)
Center ring 11 p separated by 1 ds, clr, mock picot to climb out
(Example of mock picot and climbing out)
Split ring using shuttle and long tail 5 / 5 clr rw (leave 1/4" bare thread space after each ring)
R 5 - 4 - 1 - 1 - 4 - 5 clr rw
R 5 + (join to next picot of center ring) 5 clr rw
Repeat around.
Note: The directions do not indicate joining the outer rings. However, if left unjoined, it will completely lack structure. I suggest joining the outer rings by the first picot. Example shows 11 rings in the collar.
A smaller version of the pictured collar begins also with one shuttle and a long tail.
Center ring 7 p separated by 1 ds, clr, mock picot to climb out.
R 5 - 4 - 1 - 1 - 4 - 5 clr rw
Join thread to the center picot of center ring and repeat around.
Note: The directions do not indicate joining the outer rings. However, if left unjoined, it will completely lack structure. I suggest joining the outer rings by the first picot. Directions suggest 12 wheels for collar.

New Tatting

Pattern called "Hook and Eye" is easy to make.
Insertion: (One shuttle and ball)
R 1 = 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw
Spool = 3 - 3
R 2 = 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw (always turn after making a ring)
Spool = 3 - 3
R 3 = 4 + 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw
Spool = 3 - 3
R 4 = 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw (always turn after making a ring)
Repeat for length desired.
Edging is made same as insertion except on lower edge =
R 1 = 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw
Spool 3 - 3
R 2 = 4 - 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 4 clr rw
Spool 3 - 3
R 3 = 4 + (join to ring 1) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 clr rw
Spool 3 - 3
R 4 = 4 + (join to ring 2) 2 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 1 - 2 - 4 clr rw
Repeat for length desired.
