Tatted Blossoms for Spring
Nothing says "Spring!" like flowers. And with tatted flowers you can keep that springtime feeling all year long. This week we have a new book and an old pattern to study. The Wild Rose (#22) pattern is from the Nellie Hall Youngburg project which is nearing the end. Soon all 40 patterns will be posted online free and shared with all tatters.
Flower Motif Tatting Lace by Youko Hatakeyama
This new book is a knock out! The cover is stunning. It features a completely tatted jacket with 3/4 length sleeves. Even the button closures are tatted roses! A trellis like insertion has tatted roses blooming on the outer edges. Done in pastel colors this delicate jacket is prefect for any special occasion like bridal shower, garden party, even cherry blossom viewing.
The author, Youko Hatakeyama, who is new to me, published this book this year, 2016. It is paper bound and has 24 pages, 9.5" x 7" or 25mm x18mm. The pages and projects are in full color, even the diagrams. And, it is bilingual, Japanese and English side by side.
A two-page photo tutorial in the front of the book shows the construction of the basic flower used in several patterns. Other patterns are earrings, necklace, purse, scarf and the lovely tatted jacket from the cover. In the second part of the book, motifs with fluffy multiple picots on the edges are featured in aother scarf and tatted vests.

As a summer tatting project tatters in the 2014 Online Tatting Class began rewriting and modernizing the patterns in this vintage tatting book. Diagrams and new models have been prepared to help the tatter follow the patterns more easily. Both the original public domain booklet and the new version are being posted online to share with all tatters everywhere.
Tatted Wild Rose Medallion Motif #26
The original pattern suggested tatting this medallion in very fine thread size 50. In any size it is a nicely balanced form. Whether the thread is one color, ombre, or variegated, it is a pleasing form.
