The Hidden Curriculum Revised and Expanded Review

Greetings from Winter Bound Land of OZ!

Well, the weather did not get the news about Spring Break. It has snowed a couple of days this week. I really wanted to play in the yard, but I didn't feel like freezing solid. Next week, when I have more work to do and less time for the yard, what do you think the weather will be like here? Hmmmm...

When I was taking my Masters classes, it was my good fortune to learn from Brenda Smith Myles. Dr. Myles, or Brenda, as she prefers to be called, was my thesis advisor. She is a prolific researcher, writer, and speaker, primarily about Autism, but she also knows a huge amount about ADD/ADHD. One of my first reviews was her book, The Hidden Curriculum. This week, she sent me a revised and expanded copy of that book that is so fresh off the presses that Amazon doesn't even have it listed! So, you are getting a true sneak peek of what will be a classic in the literature of social cognition. What's that? It is knowing about yourself in relationship to others in social situations.

Some teens and young adults seem to know what to do in social situations; others seem clueless about social events. The Hidden Curriculum for Understanding Unstated Rules in Social Situations for Adolescents and Young Adults by Myles, Trautman, and Schelvan gives guidance for social interactions in twenty-seven different areas. It has more than fifty pages devoted to situations in the "hidden curriculum. "
