From as early as 1559 the Vatican had its own Inquisition as far as what Catholics "ought" to read. Up until 1966 the Church did censor books. Recently, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, who some said would succeed Pope John Paul, lashed out against the best selling book, "The Da Vinci Code." He calls the novel "a sack full of lies against the Church." The controversy is over the story woven by author Dan Brown that alleges Jesus married Mary Magdalene and had children. This is in sharp contrast to the teachings of the Catholic Church which says Christ never married, was crucified, and rose from the dead. I think "The Da Vinci Code" should not be taken seriously, but should be viewed as fiction. However, let us not take what we were taught as children as "the almighty word" without at least questioning its authenticity. Otherwise, we lose our ability to wonder and explore possibilities.
