SUNDAY’S PBA PLAYOFFS FINALE CAPS 40TH YEAR OF PBA COMPETITION AT WOODLAND BOWL
Sunday’s season-ending telecast of the finals of the Lumber Liquidators Dick Weber PBA Playoffs (ESPN, 1 p.m. ET) also marks the 40th season Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis has been a significant part of the PBA Tour schedule.

The 80-lane center, a member of the Royal Pin Leisure Centers family of Indianapolis area bowling facilities, hosted its first PBA Tour stop in 1981 when Wayne Webb won the Kessler Classic. Woodland then hosted Tour stops for 20 consecutive years until a one-year hiatus. Since 2003, the center has hosted PBA events for another eight years in a row, including three U.S. Opens, three PBA Touring Players Championships, and two PBA World Championships.

BURTON, KULICK, JOHNSON ADD STAR POWER TO CONNECTICUT FUND-RAISER
For the 27th consecutive year, PBA Hall of Famer Nelson Burton Jr. was on hand for the Frank Bacon Memorial Strike-A-Thon at Brookfield Lanes in Brookfield, Conn., and this year he got some help from female PBA stars Kelly Kulick and Liz Johnson.

The fund-raising program included a match between newly-inducted Brookfield hall of famer Kent Jacobson in a Baker-style contest against the combined forces of Burton, Kulick and Johnson. Jacobson threw a 299 game at the trio, who combined for 269. That was just one of several “celebrity” matches which later included a 288 by Kulick and a 269 by Burton.

The annual bowling benefit has generated more than $200,000 for the Regional Hospice of Western Connecticut since its inception.

PBA REGIONAL PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP-EAST RAPIDLY APPROACHING
The first of the PBA’s two “major championships” for non-exempt PBA members – the renamed Regional Players Championship-East – is rapidly approaching.

The RPC-East will return to Thunderbowl Lanes in Allen Park, Mich. – the home of the 2009 PBA World Series of Bowling – May 27-30, with a new “East” designation as part of a revamping of the PBA’s tournament structure for regional competitors. The RPC-West, which will replace the traditional Regional Players Invitational later in the year, will be the second “major” for regional players. Details about the RPC-West will be announced later.

Both RPC events will be open exclusively to non-exempt PBA Tour members, offer $7,500 first prizes and elite berths in the 2012 PBA Tournament of Champions for the winners. The RPC-East will be open to a field of 270 players for an entry fee of $295. One in three entries will cash with last-to-cash guaranteed to pay a minimum of $600.

DAVE TRABER WINS 26TH PBA REGIONAL TITLE IN LAFAYETTE, IND.

It was Traber’s 26th PBA Regional victory.

Traber finished with a 10-2 match play record and 5,068 pins for 20 games, including match play bonus pins, to claim the $2,500 first prize. Lumber Liquidators PBA Tour competitors Steve Jaros of Yorkville, Ill., finished fifth and Pete Weber of St. Ann, Mo., finished ninth in the field of 79.

Senior competitor Mike Tryniski of Fulton, N.Y., finished second, 65 pins behind, for the $1,300 second prize.

Gary Morgan of Marietta, Ga., won the South Region’s Magnolia Senior Open at Sport Lanes in Martinsville, Va., on April 10, defeating Vince Honeycutt of Buford, Ga., 259-212, for the $1,700 first prize and his second South Region Senior title in four weeks.

On this week’s regional calendar is a joint PBA West/Northwest doubleheader in Hawaii. The joint Hawaii Open will be held Wednesday through Friday at Kali Lanes in Kailua, followed by the Hickam Air Force Base Open Friday through Sunday at Hickam Air Force Base.
