One look at the cover of the May/June 2018 PIECEWORK magazine made me so excited I had to stop for a cup of tea. And a piece of chocolate, too. I am a great fan of this magazine and I appreciate the effort they put into preserving the work of our hands. (I should mention that they featured my first nationally published patterns in their Nov. 1993 issue, 25 years ago. And they also sponsored my two tatting videos.)
I also am grateful that they continue to include tatting in their publications. I am delighted to see this issue has 3 pages of tatting. There is a two-page article by Kathy Augustine about a framed tatting sampler she rescued from an antique store. And, there is an elegantly simple tatted edging by Trish Faubion which is displayed on a linen hanky with one row of spokes. (Available from Handy Hands Tatting, a tatting supplies and books resource. Barbara Foster has been a distributor of my own books, The Ribbonwinners Series, for the last 24 years also.)
These hankies with spokes come in 1-3 row of holes. There is a school of thought that one may tat right into the holes to attach tatted lace to a hanky. But though should be given to the fact that the tatting will outlast the fabric. If the holes are used instead to sew the edging to the fabric, then the tatting may be easily removed and reused!
But this issue had more than tatting. It had two laces with which I was completely unfamiliar, Frisado de Valladolid which is a needle lace, and Pichwai which is a wall hanging displayed behind religious objects. And Pichwai is not made by hand but is a stunning machine-made lace.
Frisado de Valladolid is a beautiful lace product. You can see six examples of this beautiful work on the cover of the magazine. It is similar to needle weaving but is instead created by couching foundation lines down in intricate patterns.
