I recently was introduced to Hye-oon Lee who has published a tatting book, Lovely Tatting: Doilies for Spring and Summer. Last week she shared this pattern, the Cherry Blossom Motif, from this new book. The pattern is available here on BellaOnline.com: http://www.bellaonline.com/articles/art304087.asp

Hye-oon presents many traditional style doilies, small and large. But there are some non traditional construction methods used especially in the center of several doilies. Tatters are familiar with the round center ring from which we climb out to the next round with mock picot. And occasionally the line of tight rings joined shoulder to shoulder which when joined end to end forms a frame around negative space. Less often seen is the round center ring with really long picots where the climb out is through a split chain.

And the often ignored little ring, the Josephine ring or knot (jk), appears in over a dozen of the patterns. Brilliant decorative use of the jk. But the Evangeline Doily (pg. 81) had me actually winding a shuttle on the spot to try out her method of climb out. I am so tempted to explain it in detail but it doesn't feel right to spoil to fun when you find it for yourself.

I do want to note the use of the "^" in her abbreviations list.

"... ^ = When making a split ring (SR), it denotes the stitches of Sh1 and Sh2,
i.e. SR 5^5 indicates five double stitches with Sh1 and five double stitches with Sh2. "

Style of text which is in English. (pg 68) Note the use of the "^" in the directions for the split ring of round 12.

This pastel pink doily matches well with spring peonies. (pg. 47)

Hye-oon Lee started tatting while raising her two daughters as a stay-at-home mom. Within a year of learning how to tat, she started designing her own patterns. Most of her design inspiration comes from nature, and she is particularly fond of flowers. She runs a blog, www.lovelytatting.com, where she shares some her latest designs and ideas. There are patterns for free download and she does sell other patterns.

This is a lovely book. It is paper bound with 119 pages. All tatting was photographed in full cover by Hye-oon's daughter Eunice who also helped with the organization of the book. Look for it on your favorite tatting supplier's website, such as Handy Hands Tatting hhtatting.com, The Tatting Corner tattingcorner.com, or Lacis, lacis.com among many others.

Note: I was delighted to receive this book from my new friend. Hye-oon Lee. And I wish her success with it and hope for another book soon. G. Seitz
