Miss Bell very cleverly took was what originally a tatted insertion of traditional design and joined it back on itself to make a very easy scalloped edging food for collars, cuffs, and household linens. Directions: Begin with ring of 3 ds picot twice 2 ds picot twice 3 ds picot 3 ds close. 10 ds on second thread. Ring 4 ds picot three times, 4 ds close; 10 ds on the spool thread. Ring 3 ds join to side p. of first ring, finish like first; 10 ds on spool thread. Ring 4 ds join to side p of second ring; finish like second. Repeat until 7 small rings are made, * 10 ds on the spool thread, join to side picot of small ring, 10 ds, large ring: * 6 ds on spool thread. Large ring, * 10 ds p. 10 ds on spool thread. Large ring. * 10 ds on spool thread. Ring 4 ds, join to both ps. between 10 ds, 4 ds. join to end p of last small ring, 4 ds p. 4 ds, close. 10 ds on spool thread.
Repeat to end. Second scallop joined to first by end ps. of large rings. |

R = ring, CH = chain, p or - = picot, RW = reverse work, clr = close ring, + = join
R 3 - 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 clr. RW

R 3 + (join to side picot of adjacent ring) 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 clr. RW
CH 10 RW
R 4 + (join to side picot of adjacent ring) 4 - 4 - 4 clr. RW
Repeat 5 more times (until 7 of the small rings are complete.)
Continue in like manner joining the 8th and 9th small rings to the side picot of #7 small ring.
R 3 + (join to side picot of adjacent ring) 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 clr. RW
CH 6 RW
R 3 + (join to side picot of adjacent ring) 3 - 2 - 2 - 3 - 3 clr. RW
CH 10 RW
Continue in like manner but leave both the next two small rings unjoined.
Tat large ring and chain as before
R 4 + (make one join to both adjacent small rings) 4 -+ (join to center picot of ring opposite) 4 - 4 clr. RW
Second scallop joined to center picots of large rings of first scallop.
