REGIONAL ROUNDUP: WALTER RAY WINS 32ND REGIONAL TITLE

PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., boosted his amazing PBA title total to 81 overall when he defeated reigning PBA Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, by 116 pins on April 19 to win the PBA South Region Don Carter Signature Series Tampa Senior Open at AMF University Lanes.

The regional event was the final tune-up prior to the start of the Senior Sun Bowl at The Villages presented by Storm at Spanish Springs Lanes in The Villages, Fla., to kick off the 2012 PBA Senior Tour season. The win in Tampa was Williams’ 32nd in regional competition to go along with his all-time record 47 PBA Tour titles and two PBA Senior Tour victories.

In the PBA East Region, Ryan Ciminelli of Cheektowaga, N.Y. went 13-3 in match play to record a 69-pin victory over Eddie Torres of Port Ewen, N.Y. in the PBA East Region 900 Global Open at Catskill Hoe Bowl Sunday in Catskill, N.Y. Ciminelli, coming off his runner-up finish in the PBA Tournament of Champions, averaged 249 to lead qualifying and was never challenged on his way to his seventh career regional title and a $2,500 first prize.

In Grove City, Ohio, Jason Lundquist of Englewood, Ohio defeated Patrick Dombrowski of Parma, Ohio by 60 pins to win the PBA Central Debbie & Leo Nunan Memorial/Grove City Open at AMF Stardust Lanes Sunday. Lundquist finished with a 9-3 match play record and a total of 4,725 pins for 20 games, including match play bonus pins, for his third career PBA Regional and a $2,400 prize.

The PBA West and Northwest Regions traveled to Hawaii where Tyler Jensen of Ft. Worth, Texas, defeated Rodney Garrick of San Francisco, 277-258, to win the PBA West/Northwest Regions Storm Open at Hickam AFB Lanes Sunday. The win was Jensen’s 11th in PBA Regional competition and the second time he has won this event. He also earned $2,000.

On Thursday April 19, at Schofield Barracks in Waipahu, Hawaii, amateur Keith Odette of Waipahu defeated Garrick, 253-215, to win the West/Northwest Hawaii Open presented by Storm. Odette, who won his first PBA event, earned $2,000, but he doesn’t receive credit for a PBA title because he isn’t a member.

The PBA Southwest Region visited San Antonio, Texas, Sunday where Cole Copeland of Austin, Texas, defeated Terry Ward of San Angelo, Texas, 207-203, to win his first PBA title at the inaugural PBA Southwest Region San Antonio Challenge at Astro Super Bowl. PBA Challenge events are open only to players who have never won a PBA title.
