Much of the foundation tatting for the ANKARS style features overlapping rings. See model by Stephanie Wilson. Stephanie has also experimented with coiling these overlapping rings to create a 3-dimensional rose. Her pattern is shared below.
3-D Rose using ANKARS Ring-on-ring Technique
Based loosely on Jeanne Lugert's 3-D Rose Earrings

Materials: 1 shuttle, size 20 thread and small bead for center
Abbreviations:
P or - picot
R ring
(x) number in parentheses is how many rings to make before moving to the next line of the pattern [(4) = 'make 4 of these rings'] If there is no number, make only one ring with that DS count before moving to the next line of the pattern.
Pattern:
NOTE 1: Allow rings to overlap - as if stacking the ring so that it overlaps the one immediately before it. You may have to 'coax' some of the smallest rings to overlap.
NOTE 2: Begin each ring as close as possible to the ring before it, leaving no bare thread space between rings.
R: 18 - 10
R: 10 + (to p of last ring made) 8 - 10 (4)
R: 10 + (to p of last ring made) 6 - 8
R: 8 + (to p of last ring made) 8 - 8 (4)
R: 8 + (to p of last ring made) 6 - 6
R: 6 + (to p of last ring made) 8 - 6 (4)
R: 6 + (to p of last ring made) 5 - 5
R: 5 + (to p of last ring made) 6 - 5 (3)
R: 5 + (to p of last ring made) 3 - 4
R: 4 + (to p of last ring made) 4 - 4 (3)
R: 4 + (to p of last ring made) 2 - 3
R: 3 + (to p of last ring made) 5
Cut, leaving long tail.
Thread small sewing needle with tail. Allow tatting to coil into a flower shape (encourage it a bit, if necessary). Using thread and sewing needle, thread tail between rings (where a thread space would be if we had left any bare thread space) until 'top' tail is on the underneath side of the rose. Tie thread/s and hide end/s. Sew a small bead in the center of the rose.
