The Springfield Daily News, August 10, 1916, gave the following tip about tatting under the sewing tips column: "When making tatting combining rings and chains, the "wrong side out" appearance can be obviated by always beginning the chains with the last part of the double stitch." As a general rule whenever you reverse work (RW) you have an opportunity to work the next tatted element in reverse order double stitch (RODS) so as to create a definite front/back side look to the work. Traditionally, the rings were front side up and the chains were back side up. But now we can use RODS, split ring, mock picot, split chains, etc. To create the all front side look. Here is a pattern from the May 13, 1888 Daily Interocean which you can practice this method.Tat the alternating sets of 18 outside rings first. Begin with a small ring. [Keeping in mind the desire for the front/back side look, tat the small rings in reverse half stitch order: 2hs followed by 1hs etc.] R 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 clr leave 3/8" space of bare thread between rings. RW R 4 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4 [original pattern reads 2 ds but that would make the rings misshapen] clr 3/8" space of bare thread between rings. RW *R 2 + (join to last picot of initial ring) 2 - 2 - 2 clr leave 3/8" space of bare thread between rings. RW R 4 + (join to last picot of initial larger ring) 2 - 2 - 2 - 2 - 4. Repeat from * for a total of 18 sets of rings join the last rings to the first rings. Cut and finish off ends. Tat the 6 inner rings joining at the mid point to every third small ring. R 8 + 8 leave no or minimum space and continue to next inner ring. Or, if you wish to work the piece without cutting the thread, tat 5 inner rings first with the 6th ring being a split ring, using a mock picot climb in the outer row into a small split ring and continue to the larger ring as explained above. |

Occhi Schiffchenspitze - Frivolité (Langwieser/Scharowa). The 2011 edition of this book is the same as the original edition with the addition of a few more motifs in the "Musterteil" section and the back section has two peacock designs (one is featured as the new cover to the third edition.)
