Greetings Everyone ~
I apologize for the gap in sending out newsletters. I share the computer with my son Nick who uses it for his online independent study school program. It is a busy time with preparing for summer programs and finishing middle school for Nick. Next week is state testing for Nick, last week was for Matthew. The following week is the IEP and ITP for Matthew. In Los Angeles Unified School District you do the first ITP before they turn 14, which is June 30th for Matthew. The school district Nick goes to they do it at age 16, so he will have his next year and Matthew will have his triennial IEP next year and transition into high school.
I am fresh out of birthday gift ideas for Matthew. He does not like to do much, prefers to pace about the house and is very aggressive and active. I went to the Autism Society of Los Angeles transition conference a few weeks ago, took Nicholas with me to learn about issues he will be facing soon. He was not very happy to accompany me, especially when he opened his boxed lunch from Panera Bread and found all the condiment were already on the sandwiches. Good thing they included a cookie and chips.
Nick is thinking he may like to speak to people about his experience with autism as he becomes an adult, so that is something to strive for. He did well speaking at his Elementary school when he ran for office in fourth and fifth grades.
