Grapes have been a traditional needlework motif for centuries. Here is a bunch of grapes from the Novelty Tatting and Maltese Crochet Book 6 ©1917. There are many twists and turns to construct the form but they can be tatted in multiples for any length desired. Following this pattern is a modernized version of a bunch of grapes which uses the split ring technique.
No. 14 - Grape Edging:
R 10 - 5 - 5 clr rw
CH 3 - 3
R 5 + (join to last picot previous ring = lppr) 10 - 5 clr rw
CH 3 - 3 rw
R 5 + (join to lppr) 10 - 5 clr rw
CH 5 + (join to lppr) 5 - 5 + (join into the picot between R2 and R3)
R 5 - 10 - 5 clr rw
CH 5 + (join into the picot between R1 and R2)
R 5 + (join to lppr) 10 - 5 clr
CH 2 + (join to first picot of R1) 5 + (join to picot on previous ring)
CH 10 + in between the last two rings tatted.
R 20 clr
CH 10 + (join to picot of ring) 5 + (join to picot of chain)
Vine:
CH 10 - 10
R 10 + (join to chain on grapes) 5 - 5 - 10 clr rw
R 15 - 15 clr
CH 10
R 7 - 5 - 3 clr
R 4 + (join to lppr) 6 + (join to large ring) 6 - 4 clr
R 5 + (join to lppr) 8 - 8 - 5 clr
R 4 - 6 - 6 - 4 clr

CH 20 + (join to center picot of large ring) 10

A Bunch of Tatted Grapes

The split ring tatting technique is used in creating this delightful free form pattern. The pattern may be worked with two shuttles, however, it is easier and faster when worked with a tatting needle. Using about 5 yards of thread wind shuttles in the continuous thread method or cut thread and stiffen both ends with glue before pulling about 2.5 yards through the eye of the tatting needle. Begin at the lowest point of the grape bunch and upwards in a serpentine fashion (ring one.)
Use a grape-colored thread.
Ring 1: 16 close ring.
Ring 2: 12 / 4 close ring.
Ring 3: 4 / 4 + (join back to ring one) 8 close ring.
Ring 4: 4 / 10 close ring.
Ring 5: 3 + (join back to ring two) 3 / 6 close ring.
Ring 6: 4 + (join back to ring two again) 14 / 2 close ring.
Ring 7: 8 / 2 (join back to ring five) 4 close ring.
Ring 8: 9 / 3 (join back to ring four) close ring. Finish off ends.
Use a leaf-colored thread. Make a simple cloverleaf joining the first of the three rings to ring seven of the grapes and then to ring six. When complete, work a segment of chain for the stem and secure the end of it to one side of the grapes; trim threads and work ends into the back of the rings.
Ring one: 4 + 4 + 8 close ring. Do not reverse work.
Ring two: 4 + 16 close ring. Do not reverse work.
Ring three: 4 + 12 close ring. RW.
CH: 20 - 40 (your choice of length.)
