Free Cemetery Tours - History, Ornamentation, Garden Design, and Many
Stories
With a good guide, a cemetery tour can be a fascinating walk through
history. Art, architecture, garden design and horticulture are also there
for all to see. Such tours are usually free or inexpensive.

A few days ago I took a tour of Calgary's Union Cemetery with a great
local guide. Even though I have lived in Calgary for a long time, I was
amazed at how much of the city's history she revealed in just an hour.
The cemetery is quite large and we hit only a few highlights, but I
learned about the 26-year-old Chinese immigrant who left part of his life
savings to start the first hospital here, saw the grave of the famous
Black cowboy John Ware, the first woman to preside over a court in the
British Empire, and many more. Love stories, police stories, cowboy
stories - they're all here.

I got over my own jitters about visiting cemeteries long ago. They are
gardens of memory, and we the living are meant to visit them to keep the
memories going.

And, speaking of great cemeteries, that's one of the things New Orleans is
famous for. Post-Katrina, the city is still working hard to get back on
its feet. If you are considering a visit, you can read up with the
guidebook currently offered as a prize in my forum contest. Just go to
the Budget Travel forum (URL is below) and see if you can answer the
trivia question. (Must be a USA or UK resident to receive the prize).

The first question is soooo easy: What is the capital city of Canada? If
you know, go ahead and post it on the Budget Travel forum.
